Welcome!

Welcome!! My name is Paul Lappen. I am in my early 60s, single, and live in Connecticut USA. This blog will consist of book reviews, written by me, on a wide variety of subjects. I specialize, as much as possible, in small press and self-published books, to give them whatever tiny bit of publicity help that I can. Other than that, I am willing to review nearly any genre, except poetry, romance, elementary-school children's books and (really bloody) horror.

I have another 800 reviews at my archive blog: http://www.deadtreesreviewarchive.blogspot.com (please visit).

I post my reviews to:

booklore.co.uk
midwestbookreview.com
Amazon and B&N (of course)
Librarything.com
Goodreads.com
Books-a-million.com
Reviewcentre.com
Pinterest.com
and on Twitter

I am always looking for more places to post my reviews.

Math Question Book for GMAT Winners

Math Question Book for GMAT Winners, Jay John, ISBN 9798378455645

This book contains several hundred word problems covering all aspects of the math portion of the Graduate Management Admission Test (an important part of any MBA education).

The subjects explored include percent; time, speed and distance; interest and averages; geometry; algebra and probability. All problems are fully explained, along with alternate ways to solve them. The problems are based on those that have appeared in the GMAT in the past.

The best way to achieve mastery of GMAT math is to brush up on each topic, then practice, man, practice. As with the other books in this series, this book is recommended not just for people taking the GMAT. It is also recommended for high school and college students who are ready for an intellectual challenge.

The Spectacular Life of Benito Martin del Canto

The Spectacular Life of Benito Martin del Canto, David Towner, 2023

This young adult novel is really two stories in one.

Taryn Michaels is a young girl who is totally obsessed with Spanish culture. Returning from a business trip to Spain, Peter, her father, presents her with an old book he found in a used book store. It is a supernatural fantasy, with no indication of who wrote it. Taryn brings it to school, and it gets confiscated by Alice, her Spanish teacher. She checks out the book, and realizes that it may be an unpublished story by Miguel de Cervantes, written before his novel "Don Quixote." If confirmed, this would be a Huge Event, aside from the fact that the book is 400 years old.

The story, set in the 1500s, is about a boy named Benito. Raised by a herd of mountain goats, from an early age, he goes off to see the world. He does many different jobs on many different sailing ships. On one such ship, Benito is introduced to the world of slavery. He manages to free everyone on the ship. Later in life, he becomes friends with an English playwright named Shakespeare. Benito's life is filled with adventure, and narrow escapes from very unpleasant people.

Separately, these stories are excellent. Put them together, and this is an automatic Highly recommended. It's got history and adventure, and is really worth reading, for teens and adults.

My Killer: A Supernatural Crime Thriller

My Killer: A Supernatural Crime Thriller, Gary Sherbell, 2023

Joel is an Assistant District Attorney in present-day Manhattan. Karen is a co-worker, and his lover. Susan, Joel's wife, is similarly fooling around. The love left their marriage a long time ago.

Joel recently convicted a black man named Henry Nance for shooting a cop (even though the cop drew his weapon first). The Nance family is not going to let this go. A few days later, Karen and Joel save an elderly black woman from being mugged. She is a voodoo priestess, and tells Joel that if he dies in the next 14 days, his soul will enter the body of the person who is physically closest to him. The soul already inhabiting that body will disappear forever.

Two black hit men approach Karen and Joel, with murder on their minds. Karen survives, but Joel is killed. He now inhabits the body of a black man named Frank Davis. One can imagine the problems that this can cause. Can Joel/Frank convince anyone that he is not dead? Does he get arrested for Joel's murder, and thrown in prison? Can Joel discover who put out the hit on him?

This is a really good, and gritty, crime thriller novel, with a little bit of weird. It is very easy to read and understand, and will very much keep the reader's interest.
