Welcome!

Welcome!! My name is Paul Lappen. I am in my early 60s, single, and live in Connecticut USA. This blog will consist of book reviews, written by me, on a wide variety of subjects. I specialize, as much as possible, in small press and self-published books, to give them whatever tiny bit of publicity help that I can. Other than that, I am willing to review nearly any genre, except poetry, romance, elementary-school children's books and (really bloody) horror.

I have another 800 reviews at my archive blog: http://www.deadtreesreviewarchive.blogspot.com (please visit).

I post my reviews to:

booklore.co.uk
midwestbookreview.com
Amazon and B&N (of course)
Librarything.com
Goodreads.com
Books-a-million.com
Reviewcentre.com
Pinterest.com
and on Twitter

I am always looking for more places to post my reviews.

The Chronicles of Benjamin Bright

The Chronicles of Benjamin Bright: The Cursed Blood, J.S. Craig, Independently Published, 2020

First of a series, this novel is about Benjamin Bright, your average kid in present-day upstate New York. That is, until, one day, he sees a family of elves (with pointy ears) at the local shopping center. His parents hurriedly bring him to his grandfather, who lives alone in the woods. His fey powers have just emerged. Benjamin is told about his legendary lineage, and is introduced to a world of fairy tales, wizards, monsters and mayhem to find the truth about his destiny.

This is a gem of a book. It is a first-rate introduction to a series, with excellent world-building (a planet-wide magic spell is what prevents the fey from being seen by 'mundane' humans). It is told first-person by Ben, and there is plenty of good writing. This is recommended for fans of epic fantasy, like Lord of the Rings.
